History
PHCU's roots began with the formation of SC Baptist Hospital Employees' Credit Union in 1963 along with the formation of Richland Memorial Employees' Federal Credit Union in 1972 (previously known as Columbia Hospital which opened in 1967).
In the latter part of the 1990's, SC Baptist Hospital and Richland Memorial Hospital began discussions of merging the two hospitals. The Board of Directors of the two credit unions also began discussions regarding the value of merging the two hospital-based credit unions. In 1999, PHCU began operations with 6,493 members and assets of under $20 million, serving the employees of the newly formed Palmetto Health Hospital later known as Prisma Health, the SC Baptist Convention along with employee family members with offices in Columbia, SC and Easley, SC.
